Opensource apps for android

After discovering F-Droid I became very interested in open-source apps. F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device. I’ve tried Fossify apps which are exactly similar to native google apps.

I’ll mention some of the apps that I love in this article.

OpenBoard

OpenBoard is a 100% FOSS keyboard based on AOSP, with no dependency on Google binaries, and it respects your privacy. You can explore and configure the keyboard settings to your preferences. Rest assured about the privacy aspects since it does not track or log your keystrokes.

Florisboard is another open-source keyboard that emphasizes privacy and offers a variety of customization options. You can take advantage of its rich feature set and customize the keyboard layout, themes, and gestures. It stores up to 100 clipboard items but doesn’t have good spell correction support.

FairEmail

FairEmail is a fully-featured email client that focuses on privacy and usability. It can be overwhelming at first due to its extensive features and customization options. Spend some time getting familiar with its interface and features because it has a learning curve. I’ve also used K9 Mail. In my opinion, if real-time notifications are crucial, stick with FairEmail. Otherwise, K9 Mail is a simpler alternative if you can tolerate the 15-minute check interval.

Music Player

Open-source music players for Android come in various forms with different focuses, such as minimalism and feature-rich interfaces. They offer features like an equalizer, sleep timer, and file organization with a minimal interface. But I’m using gramophone as my default music player now cause of it’s vintage and aesthetic interface.

Seal

Seal allows you to download videos and audio files from platforms such as YouTube. The best feature, in my opinion, is the ability to download all videos in a YouTube playlist with one click.

Plain

PlainApp is an open-source application that allows you to manage your phone through a web browser. Access files, videos, music, contacts, and more from your desktop using a secure, easy-to-use web interface.

Termux

Termux provides a powerful terminal emulator and Linux environment for Android, allowing you to run a variety of Linux command-line utilities. You can install and configure packages according to your needs and create and run scripts to automate tasks.

Vi Music

Vi Music is an open-source app intended as a replacement for YouTube Music, offering features to stream and manage your music library. The interface is clean, and you can download songs offline without needing YouTube Premium.

Open Camera

Open Camera is a fully-featured camera app that offers extensive manual controls and features. You can experiment with the manual settings to enhance your photography skills. There is a lot of customization available in the app to match any photography style.

personalDNSfilter

PersonalDNSfilter is a DNS filter with firewall capabilities to block unwanted content and ads at the DNS level. Set up the DNS filters according to your privacy and security needs.

NewPipe

NewPipe is a lightweight YouTube frontend that does not rely on Google services and offers features like background playback and download options. You can utilize the background playback and download options for a better YouTube experience. Benefit from improved privacy since it does not use Google’s proprietary APIs. There is another alternative called librepipe which is also very nice.

There are so many other opensource apps that I didn’t mention. There are few launchers like mLauncher, pie launcher & there are few arcticons apps. Just explore this opensource world by yourself. Tailor them to your own needs and ultimately make your android feature-rich.
